Gunnar Asplund 1885 – 1940
Gunnar Asplund was born in 1885 in Stockholm and was a Swedish architect and designer. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of the possibilities and limitations of buildings. He began his career by designing several iconic buildings in Sweden, including the Stockholm Public Library and Skogskyrkogården. By experimenting with materials and forms, he created architecture that was both visually striking and technically advanced. His most famous works include sleek and functional buildings, often inspired by modernism and classicism.
Significant Collaborations
Throughout his career, Asplund collaborated with several prominent architects and designers, resulting in some of the most significant projects in modern architecture and design. One of the most notable collaborations was with Sigurd Lewerentz during the work on Skogskyrkogården, a project that later became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Together with Tallum, Asplund created several projects, including the Stockholm Armchair. This chair features a galvanized steel base made of tubes, flat steel bars, and round spun feet. The backrest and seat are made from solid European oak slats, treated with linseed oil and attached to the steel base with aluminum rivets.
Another significant work was with Cassina, which resulted in the 501 Göteborg chair. Designed by Asplund between 1934 and 1937 and produced by Cassina in 1983, the 501 Göteborg is characterized by its softly rounded form and a light wooden frame with four legs. The frame is available in walnut or ash wood with a natural or stained finish. The backrest consists of a padded steel frame, and the cushion is filled with foam for added comfort. The 501 Göteborg is available in a selection of leather and fabric upholstery for the seat and backrest. These successful projects and collaborations reinforced Asplund's reputation as a leading figure in modern architecture and design.
