The delicious Karuselli armchair was designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1964 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. Karuselli is one of the most famous and well-known lounge armchairs in the world of furniture design. Kukkapuro started developing the fiberglass chair in the 1950s, but it wasn't until 1964 that the well-known shape took hold. The international launch of the chair took place at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1965.
The shape of the Karuselli is the result of extensive experimentation. The designer spent four years sculpting the shell in the desire to find the right dimensions by initially using his own body as a yardstick. Karuselli is therefore exceptionally comfortable as well as stylistically distinct down to the smallest detail due to the fact that the armchair is ergonomically based on the shape and proportions of a human body. As a result of his persistent effort, the furniture designer finally achieved a form that represented an unusual combination of ergonomics, new materials and production methods, as well as an artistic design language. It was the combination of these qualities that made Karuselli a revolutionary armchair when it arrived. Ever since its launch in the mid-1960s, the chair has attracted attention - which Karuselli still does today.
Karuselli consists of a shell in fiberglass and chrome-plated steel and has a spin function on the foot so that it can be turned in different directions.
