John Kandell

John Kandell was one of Sweden's most influential designers, known for his ability to combine function and aesthetics in a unique and timeless way. His work has had a significant impact on modern Scandinavian design, and his creations continue to be highly appreciated today. Kandell was particularly known for his collaborations with Källemo. 

John Kandell 1925 – 1991 

John Kandell was born in 1925 in Helsingborg and was a Swedish architect, painter, and designer, as well as the brother of architect Axel Kandell. Born into a family where art and craftsmanship were highly valued, Kandell developed an early interest in design and architecture. In the 1940s, he began working as a draftsman for architect Carl-Axel Acking, and in 1947 he graduated from Konstfack in Stockholm, where he later worked as a teacher. After his graduation, Kandell established himself as one of the most progressive designers in Sweden, a position he would maintain throughout his career. 

Collaboration with Källemo 

One of John Kandell's most famous collaborations was with the furniture company Källemo, where he designed some of his most iconic works. His design philosophy was characterized by a strive to create furniture that was not only functional and comfortable but also strongly aesthetic objects that could stand as works of art in themselves. This is clearly visible in his famous "Barnbarn" children's chair, which combines practical function with a strong visual presence. 

For Källemo, he also designed the famous Camilla chair. The design breaks traditional conventions with its striking yet minimalist structure and is still a sought-after object among design enthusiasts today. Another Swedish classic is the Pilaster shelf, which was based on John's idea of creating a shelf where books lie down instead of standing up, inspired by how books are stacked on the floor. 

A Lifelong Source of Inspiration 

Throughout his career, Kandell received several prestigious awards, and his work was exhibited in many international exhibitions. He was also a prolific lecturer and teacher, passionately committed to sharing his knowledge with new generations of designers. Kandell was also commissioned by many prominent architects for interior work, such as for Svea and Göta hovrätt. 

John Kandell remained active in design until his death in 1991. His legacy and his work continue to inspire and influence new generations. Through his innovative works and deep commitment to design, Kandell has become a symbol of quality and innovation in the design world.
