The former Domus chair was created by Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. The chair is classic in its cut and has a simple, clean form. Over the years it has become a true classic in Finnish furniture design. The chair was designed as a universal chair to meet the different needs of Domus Academica's student accommodation in Helsinki, originally as a work chair in student rooms, but also in halls, auditoriums, dining areas, offices, and many other spaces. Domus was a huge success in Finland and the first Finnish-designed furniture to be exported and produced under license in other parts of the world, such as Knoll International in the USA.

The Domus chair is made of solid beech and has a plywood back and seat but is also available with a clear seat or a clear back and seat. Domus is available in various finishes such as clear lacquered beech, honey stained beech, white lacquered beech, or black stained beech. Domusis stackable seat makes it a functional chair for smaller spaces.
