Marc Newson is an Australian designer who was born in 1963 in Sydney. He graduated from Sydney University in 1986 and had his first solo exhibition at the age of 23. The exhibit included one of his most famous creations, the Lockheed Lounge, a riveted tube made of aluminium.
The Lockheed Lounge has become one of the most iconic contemporary design works and has since its creation been listed for several world record auction prices.
In 1997, Marc Newson started his own design conglomerate, Marc Newson Ltd. Through it he works in extremely wide-ranging fields and his clients include some of the most famous and prestigious brands in the world, such as Nike, Hermès, Dom Pérignon, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Apple and Louis Vuitton. In parallel to running his own company, Marc Newson worked as Creative Director for Qatar Airways from 2005 to 2015 and as a designer in Apple's Special Projects department. At Apple, he helped design the Apple Watch.
Marc Newson has been described as one of the most influential designers of his generation. His work is represented in the permanent collections of many museums, including MoMA in New York, the V&A Museum in London and the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2012, Marc Newson was awarded the British Imperial Order by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to the world of design.
