Japan Sofa 3-seater is a sofa from the Japan series designed in 1957 by Finn Juhl. Unlike many of Finn Juhl's earlier designs, Japan Sofa 3-seater and the other designs in the series are characterized by sublime simplicity. Inspired by traditional Japanese woodwork, this 3-seater sofa was designed. The horizontal solid wood backrest rests on slightly tapered legs and is a reference to the doors of Japanese temples. At the ends of the horizontal backrest is a circular detail that adds an optically elegant touch. This is typical of Finn Juhl, who said that "the deviations are in the details". Despite the simple design of the Japan Sofa 3-seater, Finn Juhl sticks to his idea of emphasizing the difference between the standing and the carried elements by separating the backrest from the standing part with a mesh seat. The sofa is made of oak or walnut and has a hand-sewn fabric cover.
Japan Sofa 3-seater and the other furniture in the series are the result of a collaboration between Finn Juhl and the furniture manufacturer France & Son. The aim of the furniture series was that it would lend itself well to mass production while meeting the ideals of the 1950s. In 2007, House of Finn Juhl launched the Japan Sofa 3-seater and the other furniture in the series.
