Arne Jacobsen designed the Drop in 1958, especially for the Sas Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and is produced by Fritz Hansen. Originally only 150 pieces were created, and it is only in later years that the Drop would be produced in larger numbers. But thanks to Jacobsen's timeless style, the design feels as relevant today as when it was launched.
The chair's drop-shaped shell is made in one piece, from durable ABS plastic with nylon reinforcement on the inside. The drop is available in a variety of finishes, and in this fully upholstered version the chair is also filled with cold-formed foam for extra soft and comfortable seating. The delicate legs are made of tubular steel with a powder-coated finish.
The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen opened in 1960 and is often referred to as the world's first design hotel, also Denmark's first skyscraper. Arne Jacobsen's designs included the Drop, whose softly rounded shell contrasted with the hotel's more austere architecture. Jacobsen handled the full design concept down to the smallest detail, from the outdoor facade and furniture to the cutlery in the restaurant. The SAS Royal Hotel has therefore come to be known as Jacobsen's work of art. Several design icons were introduced and put Danish design on the world map. It is said that the Drop was Jacobsen's favorite piece of furniture.
